Market Rasen & Louth RUFC entertained local farmers before Saturday’s game against Huntingdon as part of a fund-raising day for the benefit the club and the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. Committee member and farmer, Matthew Neesham, was the instigator of this fund-raising scheme whereby local farmers had been approached to donate a bucket of wheat to be sold on behalf of the two worthy causes. The response from the farming community was heart warmingly generous. Several farmers had already sold their wheat, but still wanted to be involved and donated the cash equivalent in lieu of their bucket.

The majority of the funds have come from the wheat sale, but the proceeds have been augmented by a raffle held on the day and an impromptu sponsored waxing. After turning out for the second team earlier in the afternoon, Ben Curtis kindly volunteered to have has hirsute back waxed at a price of £5 per strip. There were plenty of other players and spectators, including the opposition, who were willing to pay for the privilege of tearing him off a strip. Not to be outdone, teammate, James “Bemmy” Bemrose volunteered for a full chest wax in one go on the condition that £100 was pledged. In the blink of an eye, which was quicker than the waxing, the cash appeared. The second team now has two very smooth players who can be rightly proud of their contribution.

The final profit for the day, which will be split 50:50, has yet to be determined, but each recipient will receive in excess of £1,800. The rugby club will be using their share to pay for drainage and improvements on the field adjacent to the racecourse to provide pitches for the junior section.
